Speed Runs

Speed running (trying to complete a videogame in the fastest time possible) is almost as old as gaming itself. At least, it's almost as old as games that have a definite end point or staging points, since speedrunning a game with infinitely repeating levels is Sisyphean.

This collection hosts downloadable movie files documenting the swiftest possible way to complete videogames such as Quake, Metroid, Zelda and many others. The videos come from Speed Demos Archive, TASvideos, and other sources.

Unless specifically noted as an 'emulated' run, all speed runs are done on the original game hardware, using only the normal save points available to a player.

Speed run of Final Fantasy II in 38 segments completed on December 19 2005. Available in low quality only, video quality is poor when moving in the overworld. Timing note: Game's timer is referenced at its last visible point, then real time from then to final damage numbers appearing is added. Resulting time is rounded up to the next whole minute since the game timer could've have been :59 seconds at the last visible moment. Author's comments: First, I would like to thank my friend Kyle for...

Speed run of Banjo-Tooie in 12 segments completed on December 19 2005. Uses save warping and abuses death to save time. Available in four versions: low, normal, high and insane quality. Author's comments: Credits: Nate - For capturing the run from VHS Radix - For hosting the run mike89 - His Banjo Tooie 100% Speed Guide was a great starting point for strategizing my own routes, and had a few tricks that I probably wouldn't have thought of myself (such as getting the grenade eggs early to defeat...

Speed run of Deus Ex on Realistic difficulty in 44 segments, completed on December 12 2004. Available in 320x240 and 640x480 versions. Note that SDA's standard timing method is used instead of the game's timer as it doesn't display at the end. Author's comments: Well, this is my first speed run, and one of a game I've always wanted to try it on. Deus Ex has been a longtime favourite of mine, and I came back to make this run after a year or so of not playing it. It took more than a month to make...

Speed run of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask with 100% item collection in 29 segments, completed on August 5 2005. Available in 3 versions: low, normal and high quality. Author's comments: Special Thanks to: Radix - For somehow managing to violate the laws of the internet and host all these runs with no fees Nate - For capturing the run TSA - For his Ikana Castle Sequence break, idea for Stone Tower sequence break, and various little tricks I picked up from his exploratory run. Speed run of Final Fantasy V on done on January 4 2006. Available in four versions: low quality, normal quality, and 60fps high/insane quality. Author's comments: The fifth game of the Final Fantasy series was not released in the US until its Playstation remake, which is the version you see here. It is nonetheless a spectacular game, featuring a job system quite like the one in Final Fantasy: Tactics. Jobs are switchable between battles, and abilities, once learned, may be carried from one job...

Speed run of Chrono Trigger in 34 segments completed on October 26 2005. Timing note: uses game timer at last seen moment in final part plus remaining real time until final damage on Lavos. Author's comments: This is by far my most polished run -- over a month in the making and numerous test runs and multiple strategies attempted, resulting in a final run that dips below the five hour mark. What will impress most people, I predict, will be the boss fights. Most of the bosses I take on are at...

Author's comments: Hello folks, I am DAMURDOC and I am here to present you a Speedrun of one of the best game, if not the best game on PC so far in history. I played BG2 for 4 years now, and I'm still playing as you can see. I guess I will never get tired of playing Baldur's gate 2, I'ts like a drug... my drug. Speed run of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic with only dark-side choices in 26 segments, completed on July 1 2005. Available in 320x240 and 800x600 versions. Author's comments: Hello Meatbags. This is my inaugural Speed Run: Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic on Normal. Kotor: The game that proved Yoda has a speech impediment. SW: KOTOR is one of my all-time favorite games. Speed run of Castlevania: Curse of Darkness in 20 segments completed on March 2 2006. Available in four versions: low quality, normal quality, and 60fps high/insane quality. Author's comments: This run was actually delayed by a couple months due to general boredom of the game. I had made it to the 2nd Isaac fight before I back-burnered it. The fastest method of travel is to use Quick Steps - but only after I have Double Step. There's too long of a pause after doing a Quick Step without Double...

Speed run of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in 37 segments, completed on May 13 2005. Available in low and normal quality. Author's comments: Credits first - I referred quite a lot to Tirdun's walkthough from gamefaqs, and also used the Java San Andreas Map a lot to locate weapons/armour. Notes/Missions in each part: Part 1 (Big Smoke, Sweet & Kendl, Ryder, Tagging Up Turf, Cleaning The Hood, Drive-Thru, Nines and AKs, Drive-By, Sweet's Girl) - This could definitely be improved on. Speed run of Hitman 2: Silent Assassin for PC on normal skill in 20 segments, completed on August 29 2005. Available in low, normal and high quality. Author's comments: 01 - Anathema This mission already gave me a hard time, as it took a while to come up with a good route. However, when I at last found the one running up the stairs, a door would bug and one couldn't open it. Speed run of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time in 28 segments completed on June 7 2005. Available in three versions: low quality, normal quality, and 60fps high quality. Author's comments: I had originally thought that this run would be pushing the 7 hour mark VERY hard. I managed to pull it off quite a bit below that (thankfully) and wound up with a time of 4:11 when Luther drops. Skipping all the cutscenes makes all the difference. One of the main concerns I had with this run was money. Toward...

Speed run of Mega Man X6 with all 8 Maverick stages in 14 segments completed on November 27 2005. Available in 4 versions: low quality, normal quality, and 60fps high/insane quality. Author's comments: My friend who shall remain nameless was supposed to do this run near two years ago, but never went through with it. Speed run of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest in 21 segments completed on October 22 2005. Note: time is the standard SDA measure of real time since the game's timer is only visible on the file loading screen. Author's comments: My Crystalis commentary was rather long and my fingers are getting rather tired - so I'll keep this semi-brief. I had made a run attempt on this game back in the early summer, and my time came out to 3:30. I sent it in before my cable was turned back on (about a week before)....

Speed run of Quake 4 on private skill in 26 segments completed on December 29 2005. Available in 320x240 DivX and 640x480 h.264 versions. Author's comments: This game is extremely linear. Not only have they removed just about everything that can speed up your progress, like rocket jumping, they have also blocked like 99% of all possible shortcuts with invisible walls. Only one major trick is left to abuse and that is strafe jumping, which doesn't seem to work equally well on all surfaces. All...

Author's comments: It took me a lot longer than I planned to do a better run. My 1:59 was crap and I only posted it to have the 100th game at SDA be '0'. Author's comments: I had been thinking about doing a run on this game for a while now...it just took me that long to get the ambition to actually do it :P A few notes: 1) This game has a TON of randomness in it, mostly certain souls that are (for intents and purposes) required. Speed run of Super Mario Bros. done on April 10 2007. Available in five versions: low/normal quality DivX, and normal/high/low quality H.264 MPEG-4. Author's comments: I believe that this may be a perfect time by Speeddemosarchive's timing of Super Mario Bros. 1. Incomplete speed run of Jak & Daxter 2 for the PlayStation 2. Was disqualified for submission to Speed Demos Archive when the second of four source VHS tapes was lost in the mail. Author's comments: October 15, 2005 - Ben Fichter There are two reasons why I didn't do this run months ago: 1) I was afraid that it would be longer than 7 hours. 2) The game is difficult. Both reasons are why I did this in many segments. To gauge my time I would cross-multiply. I would take the overall percentage...

Single-segment speed run of Resident Evil 3 on hard mode done on November 15 2004, achieves A rank. Available in three versions: low quality, normal quality, and 60 fps high quality. Author's comments: This run was a pain due to randomness. This was the first Resident Evil game to feature this. Some items have more than one spawn location, mostly gun powder, but also the Magnum / Grenade Launcher. I had to restart this run more times due to the Magnum being in the Precinct than any other...

Single-segment speed run of Jet Force Gemini done on July 14 2004. Cut into 6 files due to avi/mp3 limitations on very long files. Author's comments: This run was done in a single, painful sitting. Besides the five hours shown here there were a couple of other failed runs I performed before this successful one. So there was definitely some fatigue towards the end. I especially remember my thumb killing me in the mine level with Vela. If I ever wobble while going in a straight line it's probably...

Speed run of Doom 3 on Marine skill in 6 segments completed on August 19 2005. Available in 320x240 and 640x480 versions. Timing note: Not timed consistantly with later runs. It included everything but loading screens, but it was shown that black screens before the loading screen comes up is also system-dependent. The difference is about two minutes in this case. Speed run of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars done in 13 segments, completed on August 22 2004 Author's comments: RPG speedruns are fairly scarce for three reasons: 1) LOOOOOONG 2) Slow 3) Random! Comparatively, Legend of the Seven Stars is very fast paced and short when compared to classic Square and Enix RPGs. Another great thing about its gameplay is that enemies can be avoided with skill and practice and battles can be made all the easier by mastering the science (and, at times,...

Speed run of American McGee's Alice on easy skill in 39 segments completed on July 4 2005. Available in normal and high quality. Author's comments: This run of American McGee's Alice is the 2nd speedrun that I did through the game, even though it's the only one I released. The first speedrun was basically a easy mode run that mainly used normal routes, that had little to no jumping (to go faster) and was only 21 segments. Author's comments: Level 1: I wait a few seconds for the first swat to run in, which allows me to avoid 3 of them while killing the other. On the way down the stairs if you kill one or more, you can usually run past (check out my health!).
